NKF-S/IIC Nordic Group Swedens Working Group on Sámi Cultural Heritage

The intention of the WGNKF-S/IIC Nordic Group Swedens WG on Sámi Cultural Heritage (which operates as a swedish section of the NKF/IIC Nordic Groups WG on Sámi Cultural Heritage [which hopefully will be formalised at the NKF meeting in september]) aims to create a common platform and a network for conservators of Sámi origin or working with Sámi collections (or recognised as equivalent). The group works from a Sámi perspective.

As a start, the following points could be addressed:
  • sharing conservation perspectives and knowledge about traditional preservation materials and methods on Sámi cultural heritage.
  • Talk about how to preserve community access to objects. Sami and indigenous objects are often grey areas in laws and policies.
  • Talk about news and trends (Swedish omvärldsbevaka).
  • Accessibility and metadata (for example in digitalisation of collections and archives).
  • Together talk about [Sámi] heritage that hurts and be a safe platform to share knowledge.
  • To avoid the risk of exploitation we decided to separate:
    • Sharing knowledge internally as a platform to ask questions and increase knowledge on Sámi cultural heritage conservation within our group and the Sámi community.
    • Spreading awareness externally with other conservators and related professions and the public about Sámi cultural heritage and its conservation.
